EDUCATION kits highlighting the dangers of cannabis use had been supplied to NSW high schools, the State Government said yesterday.

Special Minister of State John Della Bosca said that the two new resource kits, the first of their type in Australia, were developed at the request of parents.

The first kit, Marijuana Matters, was an intervention program developed for students experiencing problems with cannabis use, Mr Della Bosca said.

``It is a six-week program conducted for small groups of students by the school counsellor and a worker from the local area drug and alcohol service," he said.

``These young people need particular safety messages about risks and more information to help them stop drug use."

Mr Della Bosca said cannabis was not a harmless drug without consequences.

The second kit, Cannabis: Know the risks!, is a resource for teachers to help them educate students about the drug and the potential harm.

Mr Della Bosca said parents were consulted during the development of the kits.
