Dope Warning Kits In Schools

Illawarra Mercury

Monday March 1, 2004

EDUCATION kits highlighting the dangers of cannabis use had been supplied to NSW high schools, the State Government said yesterday

Special Minister of State John Della Bosca said the two new resource kits, the first of their type in Australia, were developed at the request of parents across the state.

The first kit - Marijuana Matters - was an intervention program developed for students already experiencing problems with cannabis use, he said.

``It is a six-week program conducted for small groups of students by the school counsellor and a worker from the local area drug and alcohol service," Mr Della Bosca said.

``These young people need particular safety messages about risks and more information to help them stop drug use."

Mr Della Bosca said cannabis was not a harmless drug without consequences.

``It is capable of causing significant health and social problems and we need to get that message to young people as early as possible," he said.

The second kit - Cannabis: Know the risks! - is a resource for teachers to help them educate students about the drug and the potential harm.
